چکیده

EQuB is an overlay mechanism to Ethernet’s MAC protocol that provides QoS guarantees to real-time applications. In its basic form, EQuB relies on the sensing and collision detection abilities of standard network interface cards and, in addition, requires only that those cards be capable of sending jam signals—so called black bursts—of pre-specified durations. EQuB gives access priority to realtime traffic, provides round-robin service among real-time hosts and guarantees a small, bounded delay to real-time packets. We also discuss enhancements to the basic EQuB mechanism that improve its performance. Simulation results are presented that assess the performance of 10 and 100BASE-T Ethernet LANs with a mixed population of data and real-time hosts. We conclude that, in spite of the priority attained by real-time traffic, data packet delays are not significantly affected as data load is traded for real-time load, and this is because EQuB dispatches packets to the channel much more efficiently than Ethernet’s

On the Behavior of Black Bursts in Tick-Synchronized Networks

In wireless networks, many existing protocols suffer from destructive collisions of simultaneously sent frames, influencing their quality-of-service and their application in real-time scenarios. With black bursts, this paper investigates a relatively unexplored method for the collision-protected transmission of information in wireless networks. Although such transmissions are slower and less ef...

An Innovative System for Full-Management of CB Using Current Injection Method

In this article, an innovative supervision system will be proposed that can observe and analyze health of Circuit Breaker’s trip coil. The proposed design also logs changes in the coil's quality and informs network supervisor in case of Circuit Breaker (CB) failure. This system injects small direct currents to the Circuit Breaker connections and the trip coil to compute CB’s health and characte...

Real Time Characteristics of Ethernet and Its Improvement

There is a growing interest of using Ethernet to support time constrained communication raised from process control, factory automation and other real-time applications. This paper first presents a comprehensive analysis of the temporal characteristics of traditional Ethernet and the improvements for them, then summarizes the interesting features offered by a switched Ethernet for supporting ti...

NSIS-Based Quality of Service and Resource Allocation in Ethernet Networks

The definition of the IEEE 802.1Q and IEEE 802.1p standards provided Class of Service (CoS) capabilities to Ethernet networks and, consequently, allowed new QoS services to be deployed. This is used by the Subnet Bandwidth Management (SBM) protocol, an RSVP-based protocol that provides IntServ-like services at Ethernet level. This paper proposes an alternative way to quality of service provisio...

Towards Coordination of Multiple Machine Translation Services

Machine translation services available on the Web are getting increasingly popular. Multiple translation services are often combined for intercultural communication. Furthermore, since English is most frequently used as a hub language, it is often necessary to cascade different translation services to realize translations between non-English languages. As a result, the word sense is often chang...
